There was a surprise result when twelfth ranked Unicaja Malaga (7-6) won at home against higher ranked Lagun Aro GBC (7-6) 69-56 on Wednesday. The hosts trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 8-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 69-56. Unicaja Malaga dominated on the defensive end, holding Lagun Aro GBC to just 6 points in second quarter. British forward Joel Freeland (208-87) stepped up and scored 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and American guard Terrell McIntyre (175-77, college: Clemson) chipped in 9 points and 6 assists. At the losing side American guard Jimmy Baron (191-86, college: Rhode Island) responded with 15 points and 5 rebounds and center David Doblas (206-81) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Unicaja Malaga moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 7 other teams including defeated Lagun Aro GBC. Unicaja Malaga will meet DKV Joventut (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Lagun Aro GBC will play against Meridiano Alicante (#18) and hope to secure a win.
