Very expected game when 7th ranked Gold Coast Blaze (6-9) lost on the road to third ranked Cairns Taipans (9-4) 86-82 on Friday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 23-10 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Center Ian Crosswhite (212-82, college: Oregon) nailed a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and American guard Ayinde Ubaka (193-85, college: California) accounted for 19 points and 4 assists. Four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. The former international forward Mark Worthington (202-83, college: Metro St.) came up with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds and international guard Adam Gibson (188-86) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists respectively for Gold Coast Blaze in the defeat. Cairns Taipans has a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain third place with 9-4 record having five points less than leader Breakers. Loser Gold Coast Blaze dropped to the sixth position with nine games lost. Cairns Taipans will meet at home Melbourne Tigers (#7) in the next round. Gold Coast Blaze will play against Adelaide 36ers in Findon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
