Second Stage Round 6: Penarol - Lanus 85-68
Date: January 9, 2011
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Lanus (3-2) against eighth ranked Penarol (3-1) on Sunday night. Visiting Lanus was defeated by eighth ranked Penarol (3-1) in Mar del Plata 85-68. It looked good early as Lanus took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Penarol had a 19-15 second period charge getting the lead and Lanus was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 68-85. Lanus was plagued by 33 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of international forward Leonardo Gutierrez (200-78) who helped to win the game recording 15 points and 6 rebounds and the former international power forward Martin Leiva (208-80) who added 11 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Four Penarol players scored in double figures. American center Terrell Taylor (203-81, college: Virginia Tech, agency: Dream Team Management) responded with 17 points and 6 rebounds and guard Nicolas Laprovittola (191-90) scored 15 points. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Defending champion moved-up to fifth place. Lanus at the other side dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. Penarol will play against bottom-ranked Sionista (#16) in Parana in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Lanus will play at home against Club 9 (#11) in Rio Tercero and hopes to get back on the winning track.
