Seventh ranked Gold Coast Blaze won an overtime thriller edging 4th placed Wollongong Hawks by one point 86-87 on Sunday night. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Wollongong Hawks won third quarter 18-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Wollongong Hawks used huge pressure winning it 27-18 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 11-12. They outrebounded Wollongong Hawks 41-30 including 30 on the defensive glass. 31 personal fouls committed by Wollongong Hawks helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Mark Worthington (202-83, college: Metro St.) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. American power forward Ira Clark (203-75, college: Texas) contributed with 17 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. American guard Gary Ervin (186-83, college: Arkansas) answered with 22 points and 5 rebounds and center Larry Davidson (207-83, college: Boise St.) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Wollongong Hawks. Five Gold Coast Blaze and four Wollongong Hawks players scored in double figures. Wollongong Hawks' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Gold Coast Blaze (6-9) moved-up to sixth place. Wollongong Hawks lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with six games lost. Gold Coast Blaze are looking forward to face Adelaide 36ers (#8) in Findon in the next round. Wollongong Hawks will play on the road against the league's second-placed Perth Wildcats (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
