Regular Season Round 15: Sparta - Basket Esch 78-80 OT

Sparta (#5) forced the game against Basket Esch (#2) into an overtime, but lost by two points 78-80 on Sunday night. The game took place in Bertrange. But the guests from Esch were better at the end. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Sparta won third quarter 18-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Sparta used huge pressure winning it 24-19 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period -. Strangely Sparta outrebounded Basket Esch 41-29 including a 17-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by Sparta helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for American forward John Reimold (198-81, college: Bowling Green) who led his team to a victory scoring 31 points. Slovakian power forward Stefan Svitek (203-77) helped adding 14 points and 9 rebounds. Four Basket Esch players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was the former international forward Larrie Smith (197-75, college: Tennessee Tech) with 22 points and 9 rebounds and American power forward Cory Abercrombie (201-85, college: Independence CC) scored 17 points and 6 rebounds. Sparta's coach Olaf Stolz rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Basket Esch maintains second place with 11-4 record behind leader T71. Sparta lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with seven games lost. Basket Esch are looking forward to face league's leader T71 in Dudelange in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sparta will play on the road against Musel Pikes (#6) in Stadrbredimus and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
