Regular Season Round 17: Breakers - Hawks 80-76

Leader New Zealand Breakers delivered the fifteenth victory. This time they beat 5th ranked Wollongong Hawks (9-11) 80-76 in Auckland. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-19. But Wollongong Hawks won second period 24-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Fiji-New Zealand forward Mika Vukona (197-82) nailed a double-double by scoring 11 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side and guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) accounted for 22 points. New Zealand Breakers' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American guard Gary Ervin (186-83, college: Arkansas) came up with 21 points and center Larry Davidson (207-83, college: Boise St.) added 13 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Wollongong Hawks in the defeat. Four Wollongong Hawks players scored in double figures. New Zealand Breakers (15-3) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place. Wollongong Hawks lost ninth consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with 11 games lost. New Zealand Breakers' next round opponent will be Melbourne Tigers (#8) at home and are hoping to win another game. Wollongong Hawks will play against the league's second-placed Perth Wildcats.
