Regular Season Round 18: Breakers - Tigers 101-91

NBL top team - New Zealand Breakers (16-3) managed to deliver another win on Friday. This time they beat eighth ranked Melbourne Tigers (7-13) in Auckland 101-91. Melbourne Tigers were trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 29-15 charge of New Zealand Breakers, which allowed them to win the game. They made 19-of-21 free shots (90.5 percent) during the game. Strangely Melbourne Tigers outrebounded New Zealand Breakers 36-24 including a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. Guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) notched 24 points to lead the effort and American forward Gary Wilkinson (206-82, college: Utah St.) supported him with 22 points. New Zealand Breakers' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even a double-double of 35 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds by power forward Cameron Tragardh (209-83, college: ORU) did not help to save the game for Melbourne Tigers. Jamaican-American guard Corey Williams (191-77, college: Alabama St.) added 18 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. New Zealand Breakers have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 16-3 record. Loser Melbourne Tigers keep the eighth place with 13 games lost. New Zealand Breakers will meet Gold Coast Blaze (#6) in the next round where they are favorite. Melbourne Tigers will play against Cairns Taipans and hope to secure a win.
