Regular Season Round 19: Blaze - Breakers 115-123

NBL top team - New Zealand Breakers (18-3) added another victory to their record on Sunday. This time they beat fifth ranked Gold Coast Blaze (10-12) in Broadbeach 123-115. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Gold Coast Blaze. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 34-25. But Gold Coast Blaze won third quarter 27-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. New Zealand Breakers shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Gold Coast Blaze was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) who led his team to a victory scoring 35 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds. American forward Gary Wilkinson (206-82, college: Utah St.) helped adding 21 points. At the losing side the former international swingman James Harvey (196-79, agency: Interperformances) responded with 27 points and American power forward Ira Clark (203-75, college: Texas) scored 23 points. Four New Zealand Breakers and five Gold Coast Blaze players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for New Zealand Breakers. They maintain first place with 18-3 record. Gold Coast Blaze at the other side keeps the fifth position with 12 games lost. New Zealand Breakers will face Wollongong Hawks (#5) in Gwynneville in the next round. Gold Coast Blaze will play again on the road against the league's leader New Zealand Breakers in Auckland.
