Second Stage Round 23: Penarol - Atenas 83-76
Date: March 8, 2011
Rather predictable result in Mar del Plata where fourth ranked Penarol (14-9) beat 7th ranked Atenas (12-10) 83-76 on Tuesday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Atenas won third quarter 24-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was the former international power forward Martin Leiva (208-80) who scored 18 points and 9 rebounds. The former international forward Marcos Mata (202-86) chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds. Penarol's coach Sergio Hernandez allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Miguel Gerlero (192-88) produced 28 points (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) and American forward Gregory Lewis (198-78, college: Winthrop, agency: Dream Team Management) added 11 points and 12 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Defending champion moved-up to third place, which they share with La Union. Loser Atenas keeps the seventh position with ten games lost. Penarol will face Quimsa (#8) in Santiado Estero in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Atenas will play on the road against Monte Hermoso.
