Not a big story in a game when bottom-ranked Bomberos de Mexicali (0-4) was defeated on the road by top-ranked Rayos de Hermosillo (4-0) 105-88 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Rayos de Hermosillo. Bomberos de Mexicali was better in third quarter 26-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Rayos de Hermosillo made 25-of-33 free shots (75.8 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Rayos de Hermosillo especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of Jordanian-American swingman Jamal Abu-Shamala (196-87, college: Minnesota) who helped to win the game recording 26 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) and American guard Steve Monreal (180, college: Cal.St.-Monterey) who added 24 points and 6 assists during the contest. Abu-Shamala is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Rayos de Hermosillo's coach Dan Tacheny used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side the former international power forward Hugo Carrillo (205-83) responded with 25 points and 5 rebounds and American guard Michael Gale (193-82, college: Centenary) scored 20 points. Four Bomberos de Mexicali players scored in double figures. Rayos de Hermosillo have a solid four-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Culiacan. Loser Bomberos de Mexicali still closes the standings with four games lost. Rayos de Hermosillo will face league's leader Caballeros de Culiacan on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Bomberos de Mexicali will play against Pioneros Los Mochis (#8) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
