Regular Season Round 23: Hawks - Taipans 67-68

Important game to mention about took place in Gwynneville. Fifth ranked Cairns Taipans (14-12) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging 4th placed Wollongong Hawks (14-13) 68-67 in the fight for the fourth place. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Wollongong Hawks. Wollongong Hawks were ahead by 2 points after three quarters before a 16-13 charge of Cairns Taipans, which allowed them to win the game. British-New Zealand guard Phill Jones (196-74) saved the victory by scoring 19 points and 7 rebounds (perfect behind the arc making all five shots). Center Ian Crosswhite (212-82, college: Oregon) contributed with 6 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Cairns Taipans' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international swingman Glen Saville (197-76) answered with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and American guard Gary Ervin (186-83, college: Arkansas) added 15 points in the effort for Wollongong Hawks. Four Wollongong Hawks players scored in double figures. Cairns Taipans moved-up to fourth place. Wollongong Hawks at the other side dropped to the fifth position with 13 games lost. Cairns Taipans will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Wollongong Hawks will play at home against Kings (#9) in Sydney and hope to get back on the winning track.
