Regular Season Round 8: Hermosillo - Guasave 97-91

Date: March 23, 2011
The game between Top Four teams took place in Hermosillo. Second ranked host Rayos de Hermosillo (6-2) defeated one of their biggest challengers Frayles de Guasave (5-3) 97-91. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Rayos de Hermosillo made 23-of-27 charity shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They brought some defensive toughness making 13 blocks. The winners were led by American guard Steve Monreal (180, college: Cal.St.-Monterey) who scored that evening 11 points and 9 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and the other American import guard Chavis Holmes (193, college: VMI) supported him with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Even a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds by international forward Michael Strobbe (201-85) did not help to save the game for Frayles de Guasave. The former international swingman Alonso Izaguirre (200-76) added 22 points and 7 rebounds for the guests. Four Rayos de Hermosillo and five Frayles de Guasave players scored in double figures. Rayos de Hermosillo keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Cananea and Culiacan. Frayles de Guasave at the other side keeps the fourth place with three games lost. Rayos de Hermosillo will play against Ostioneros de Guaymas (#6) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Frayles de Guasave will play against Bomberos de Mexicali and hopes to get back on the winning track.
