The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Mineros de Cananea (13-3) on the court of sixth ranked Bomberos de Mexicali on Wednesday night. Visitors were defeated by Bomberos de Mexicali 94-83. It ended at the same time the ten-game winning streak of Mineros de Cananea. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Bomberos de Mexicali dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Mineros de Cananea's 30 and made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Bomberos de Mexicali made 16 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Michael Gale (193-82, college: Centenary) who helped to win the game recording 34 points (!!!) and 6 blocks and the former international power forward Hugo Carrillo (205-83) who added 14 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Bomberos de Mexicali's coach Luis Nicoletti used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American guard Davin White (186-81, college: Cal.St. Northridge) responded with 32 points and 5 rebounds and his fellow American import forward Derek Thomas (193-84, college: Appalachian St.) scored 16 points and 6 rebounds. Bomberos de Mexicali (8-8) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Culiacan and Guaymas. Mineros de Cananea at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. They share it with Hermosillo. Bomberos de Mexicali is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Coras de Tepic (#10) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Mineros de Cananea will play against Pioneros Los Mochis (#9) and is hoping to win this game.
