Regular Season Round 18: Culiacan - Tijuana 84-99
Date: April 9, 2011
There was a small surprise when eighth ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (8-10) beat on the road 6th ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (9-9) 99-84 on Saturday. Caballeros de Culiacan was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 25-8 charge of Tijuana Zonkeys, which allowed them to win the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Tijuana Zonkeys made 11 blocks. American power forward Cyrus Tate (203-85, college: Iowa, agency: Edge Sports) notched a double-double by scoring 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the effort and the other American import forward Travis Gabbidon (201, college: UTSA) supported him with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Even a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds by the former international center Victor Avila (210-77, college: Oklahoma) did not help to save the game for Caballeros de Culiacan. American guard Rene Rougeau (198-86, college: UNLV) added 23 points and 6 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Caballeros de Culiacan's coach gave the chance to play for twelve players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Tijuana Zonkeys moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Guaymas. Defending champion Caballeros de Culiacan dropped to the fifth position with nine games lost. They share it with Nogales. Tijuana Zonkeys will meet at home Ostioneros de Guaymas (#7) in the next round. Caballeros de Culiacan will play against Pioneros Los Mochis and hope to secure a win.
