There was no surprise when 10th ranked Pioneros Los Mochis (3-23) were defeated at home by seventh ranked Bomberos de Mexicali (13-13) 99-90. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Pioneros Los Mochis won third quarter 22-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Strangely Pioneros Los Mochis outrebounded Bomberos de Mexicali 44-29 including a 21-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. 26 personal fouls committed by Pioneros Los Mochis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Michael Gale (193-82, college: Centenary) notched 37 points (!!!), 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals to lead the effort and the other American import forward James Penny (198-76, college: TCU) supported him with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Even 23 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) by American guard Detrick White (184-76, college: Mississippi St.) did not help to save the game for Pioneros Los Mochis. Guard Juan Favela (183-91) added 18 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Bomberos de Mexicali moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Nogales. Pioneros Los Mochis lost eleventh consecutive game. They stay dead last with 23 lost games. Bomberos de Mexicali's next round opponent will be higher ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (#3) on the road and it may be quite challenging game. Pioneros Los Mochis will play against Tijuana Zonkeys (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
