Second Stage Round 9: Basket Esch - Etzella 72-73

The most exciting game of round 9 in the Diekirch League took place in Esch. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 5th ranked Basket Esch (15-12) to second ranked Etzella (19-8) 73-72 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Basket Esch. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 25-13. But Basket Esch won second period 21-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American center Karim Shabazz (218-78, college: Providence) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and guard Tim Giver (184-80) chipped in 18 points. Four Etzella players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward John Reimold (198-81, college: Bowling Green) with 27 points and 7 rebounds (perfect behind the arc making all five shots) and Slovakian power forward Stefan Svitek (203-77) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds. Etzella maintains second place with 19-8 record having just three points less than leader Musel Pikes. Newly promoted Basket Esch dropped to the fourth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Amicale. Etzella are looking forward to face league's leader T71 in Dudelange in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Basket Esch will play on the road against Sparta in Bertrange and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
