Seventh-ranked Bomberos de Mexicali (13-14) was very close to win a game against third ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (18-9) on Tuesday. Caballeros de Culiacan managed to secure only three-point victory 70-67. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Bomberos de Mexicali. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Bomberos de Mexicali won third quarter 16-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Strangely Bomberos de Mexicali outrebounded Caballeros de Culiacan 47-35 including a 37-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Caballeros de Culiacan made 10 blocks. It was a good game for naturalized American forward Quentin Gonzalez (200-84, college: McNeese St.) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds. American guard Marcus Moore (198-80, college: Washington St.) contributed with 16 points and 4 blocks for the winners. Caballeros de Culiacan's coach Jonathan Meza used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. answered with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks and American forward James Penny (198-76, college: TCU) added 19 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Bomberos de Mexicali. Caballeros de Culiacan have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. Defending champion maintains third place with 18-9 record having four points less than leader Cananea. Bomberos de Mexicali at the other side keeps the seventh position with 14 games lost. Caballeros de Culiacan are again looking forward to face Bomberos de Mexicali (#7) at home in the next round. Bomberos de Mexicali will have a break next round.
