There was a small surprise when fourth ranked Frayles de Guasave (17-11) won against at home much higher ranked Rayos de Hermosillo (19-9) 97-93 on Wednesday. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Frayles de Guasave made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Strangely Rayos de Hermosillo outrebounded Frayles de Guasave 48-31 including 34 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Frayles de Guasave made 7 blocks. American players dominated the game. It was a very good performance for guard Kevin Sowell (190-81) who helped to win the game recording 38 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds. Guard William Funn (188-82, college: Portland St.) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 assists for the winners. Worth to mention Sowell played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Center Marquise Gray (206-86, college: Michigan St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds and forward Terrance Thomas (198-80, college: Baylor) added 14 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists in the effort for Rayos de Hermosillo. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Frayles de Guasave maintains fourth position with 17-11 record. Rayos de Hermosillo lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the second place with nine games lost. Frayles de Guasave will face Bomberos de Mexicali (#7) on the road in the next round. Rayos de Hermosillo will play against Ostioneros de Guaymas (#6).
