Very expected game when 8th ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (15-18) were smashed on the road by third ranked Rayos de Hermosillo (22-11) 106-76 on Friday. The game without a history. Rayos de Hermosillo led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 76 of its points in the paint compared to Tijuana Zonkeys' 54. They outrebounded Tijuana Zonkeys 40-27 including 32 on the defensive glass. Rayos de Hermosillo looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 4 passes made by Tijuana Zonkeys' players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Rayos de Hermosillo made 11 blocks. It was a good game for American center Marquise Gray (206-86, college: Michigan St.) who led his team to a victory with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. Power forward Juan Manuel Esteva (196-83) contributed with 23 points and 4 assists for the winners. Rayos de Hermosillo's coach Dan Tacheny felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American power forward Cyrus Tate (203-85, college: Iowa, agency: Edge Sports) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 10 rebounds and Nickolas Velasquez added 17 points and 5 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!) in the effort for Tijuana Zonkeys. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Rayos de Hermosillo maintains third place with 22-11 record having just three points less than leader Cananea. Loser Tijuana Zonkeys keep the eighth position with 18 games lost. Rayos de Hermosillo will face again Tijuana Zonkeys (#8) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game.
