Important game to mention about took place in Zacatecas. Top-ranked Barreteros (2-0) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 5th ranked Pioneros (1-1) 78-75 on Saturday evening. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It looked good early as Pioneros took an 4-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Barreteros had a 22-9 second period charge getting the lead and Pioneros were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 75-78. Barreteros players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. American guard Melvin Council (191, college: Robert Morris) orchestrated the victory by scoring 34 points (!!!). The other American import forward James Reaves (203-82, college: Niagara, agency: TSS Management) contributed with 24 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Barreteros' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international swingman Romel Beck (203-82, college: UNLV, agency: Interperformances) replied with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and American guard Gregory Grays (185-79, college: Detroit Mercy, agency: Interperformances) added 15 points and 8 assists in the effort for Pioneros. Barreteros keep a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams. Pioneros at the other side keep the fifth place with one game lost. They share the position with 5 other teams. Barreteros will play against Soles (#4) in Mexicali in the next round. Pioneros will play at home against Lechugueros in Leon to get more than just one victory in their record.
