Very expected game when bottom-ranked Aris (0-2) was smashed by top-ranked Athinaikos (2-0) in Thessaloniki 72-37 on Saturday. The game without a history. Athinaikos led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Aris to just 6 points in second quarter. Athinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Aris' 24. Athinaikos forced 19 Aris turnovers and outrebounded them 40-27 including 28 on the defensive glass. American forward Felicia Chester (190-88, college: De Paul) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). International forward Katerina Sotiriou (187-84) contributed with 13 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The former international power forward Evangelia Kotopodi (188-87) replied with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and center Fedra Skiadopoulou (191-90) added 7 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Aris. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Aris still closes the standings with two games lost. Athinaikos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Athens to the arena Panionios.
