There was a minor upset when higher ranked Asefa Estudiantes (1-2) lost to fifteenth ranked Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (1-2) in Madrid 80-88 on Sunday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-13. But Asefa Estudiantes won second period 22-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Asefa Estudiantes 47-17 including a 20-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for Australian guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 5 assists. Mexican power forward Gustavo Ayon (209-85, college: San Jose St., agency: Duran International) contributed with 20 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada's coach Porfirio Fisac used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Dominican guard Luis Flores (188-81, college: Manhattan) answered with 21 points and American swingman Antoine Wright (201-84, college: Texas A&M) added 19 points in the effort for Asefa Estudiantes. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada left bottom position moving up to twelfth place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Asefa Estudiantes. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada will face FIATC Joventut (#13) in Badalona in the next round.
