There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Fabi Shoes Montegranaro (1-1) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Cimberio Varese (1-1) 101-88 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Cimberio Varese. Fabi Shoes Montegranaro was better in fourth quarter 25-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cimberio Varese made 22-of-23 free shots (95.7 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 63.0 percentage. Cimberio Varese looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard Justin Hurtt (194-88, college: Tulsa) who scored 19 points. Croatian point guard Rok Stipcevic (186-86) chipped in 13 points and 7 assists. Cimberio Varese's coach Carlo Recalcati used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American-Swiss power forward Greg Brunner (201-83, college: Iowa) produced 12 points and 9 rebounds and Bulgarian power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: Beo Basket) added 12 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the guests. Four Cimberio Varese and five Fabi Shoes Montegranaro players scored in double figures. Cimberio Varese left bottom position moving up to third place, which they share with 10 other teams including defeated Fabi Shoes Montegranaro. Cimberio Varese will face bottom-ranked Novipiu CM (#17) in Casale in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Fabi Shoes Montegranaro will play at home against Lottomatica Roma (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
