Rather expected game when bottom-ranked West Coast Waves (0-4) were rolled over on the road by seventh ranked Bendigo Spirit (2-2) 91-52 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Bendigo Spirit. West Coast Waves managed to win fourth quarter 20-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Bendigo Spirit dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to West Coast Waves' 44. Bendigo Spirit forced 20 West Coast Waves turnovers and outrebounded them 51-35 including a 34-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Bendigo Spirit looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by West Coast Waves' players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Bendigo Spirit made 8 blocks. It was a great evening for international guard Deanna Smith (179-80) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds. Canadian power forward Chelsea Aubry (189-84, college: Nebraska) helped adding 19 points and 5 rebounds. Four Bendigo Spirit players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was guard Melissa Marsh (175-85) with 14 points and 5 rebounds and center Zoe Harper (191-88, college: Minnesota) scored 8 points and 8 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Bendigo Spirit moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Logan T. Loser West Coast Waves still closes the standings with four games lost. They share the position with AIS. Bendigo Spirit will meet league's leader Sydney Uni Flames on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. West Coast Waves will play against Dandenong Rangers (#5) and hope to get finally their first victory.
