There was a surprise result when fifteenth ranked Gernika (1-3) won against at home higher ranked ASEFA Estudiantes (1-3) 69-65 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-10. But ASEFA Estudiantes won second period 17-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. ASEFA Estudiantes was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American forward Tynikki Crook (185-89, college: Marshall) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds (made all of her seven free throws) for the winners. Ane Mugira chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds. The former international power forward Marta Zurro (186-80) produced 22 points and 9 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and center Elena Diaz (188-92) added 11 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. ASEFA Estudiantes' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Gernika left bottom position moving up to tenth place in Group B, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated ASEFA Estudiantes. It was ASEFA Estudiantes' third loss in a row. Gernika will face Cravic Reus (#15) in the next round where they are favorite.
