Regular Season Round 6: TM Hotel Cork - UL Aughinish 71-87

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated TM Hotel Cork (5-1) at the home court on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by UL Aughinish (7-0) 87-71. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of TM Hotel Cork. UL Aughinish forced 24 TM Hotel Cork turnovers. Strangely TM Hotel Cork outrebounded UL Aughinish 46-27 including a 20-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Canadian-British guard Rachel Vanderwal (176-83, college: Boston U.) who scored 27 points, 8 assists and 5 steals. Loretta Maher chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds. Five UL Aughinish players scored in double figures. UL Aughinish's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international guard Niamh Dwyer (176-82, college: Monmouth) who recorded a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 10 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international guard Claire Rockall (178-90, college: Iowa St.) added 14 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists respectively. UL Aughinish have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 7-0 record. TM Hotel Cork at the other side keeps the second place with one game lost. They share the position with DCU Mercy. UL Aughinish are looking forward to face Waterford Wildcats (#5) at home in the next round. TM Hotel Cork will play against Peugeot Meteors in Dublin and is hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
