Regular Season Round 5: Hitachi SR - Aishin SH 71-68 OT

Round 5 in JBL means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Osaka where host Hitachi Sunrockers (7-3) edged league's leader Aishin Sea Horses (8-2) 71-68 in overtime on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Aishin Sea Horses. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 24-16 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 9-6. The best player for the winners was Swedish forward Christian Maraker (206-82, college: Pacific) who scored 26 points and 9 rebounds. International guard Fumio Nishimura (177-86) chipped in 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Hitachi Sunrockers' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international power forward J.R. Sakuragi (206-76, college: UCLA) produced a double-double by scoring 29 points and 13 rebounds and Jamaican center Kevin Young (206-84, college: Missouri) added 8 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the guests. Hitachi Sunrockers maintains third place with 7-3 record having just two points less than leader Toyota Alvark. Defending champion Aishin Sea Horses dropped to the second position with two games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Toyota Alvark. Aishin Sea Horses will play next round against strong Mitsubishi Dolphins trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Hitachi Sunrockers will try to continue on its current victory against first ranked Toyota Alvark in Fuchu.
