Regular Season Round 5: Hapoel Afula - Hod Hasharon 87-92

There was a minor upset when higher ranked Hapoel Afula (2-3) lost at home to eleventh ranked Hod Hasharon (2-3) 92-87 on Tuesday. Hapoel Afula trailed by 14 points at halftime and as many as 15 after three quarters before a 38-28 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 87-92 at the end of the game. Hod Hasharon shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Hapoel Afula was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Puerto Rican point guard Javier Gonzalez (182-89, college: N.Carolina St.) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points and 5 assists. The former international guard Avi Sukar (187-76) contributed with 19 points and 5 assists for the winners. Four Hod Hasharon players scored in double figures. Hod Hasharon's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American forward Gregg Thondique (201-87, college: Virginia Union) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds and the other American import guard Ronny LeMelle (196-81, college: Auburn) added 18 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Hapoel Afula. Hod Hasharon moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Hapoel Afula. Hapoel Afula lost their third game in a row. Hod Hasharon will face Lev Hasharon (#8) at home in the next round.
