There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Palma (0-7) was outleveled by eleventh ranked Segle XXI (3-4) in Barcelona 73-40 on Saturday. The game without a history. Segle XXI led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They held Palma to an opponent 22.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 41.5 percent accuracy of the winners. Segle XXI forced 22 Palma turnovers and outrebounded them 45-31 including 18 on the offensive glass. Forward Irene Gari (184-94) orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points. Forward Maria Arrojo (186-85) contributed with 20 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American Sylita Thomas (-77) replied with 11 points and 7 rebounds and swingman Barbara Matemalas (174-86) added 8 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for Palma. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Segle XXI moved-up to eighth place in Group B, which they share with Irlandesas and Orion-GDKO. Loser Palma still closes the standings with seven games lost. Segle XXI will face higher ranked Fundal Alcobendas (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Palma will play against ASEFA Estudiantes (#12) in Madrid and looks forward to get finally their first victory.
