Regular Season Round 4: UBC - Regina 100-71

Everything went according to plan when top-ranked Thunderbirds (2-0) outplayed bottom-ranked Cougars (0-3) in Vancouver, BC 100-71 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Thunderbirds. Cougars was better in second period 25-24. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Thunderbirds forced 29 Cougars turnovers and had a 32-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. Thunderbirds looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Thunderbirds made 7 blocks. Cougars were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for international point guard Nathan Yu (189-89) who helped to win the game recording 34 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Forward Tommy Nixon (198) contributed with 19 points and 4 assists (made all of his eight free throws) for the winners. Guard Sterling Nostedt (185) replied with 16 points and 4 steals and forward Connor Burns (201) added 10 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Cougars. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Thunderbirds keep a position of league leader, which they share with 8 other teams. Loser Cougars still closes the standings with three games lost. Thunderbirds will face Spartans (#7) in Langley, BC in the next round where they are favorite. Cougars will play at home against Dinos (#8) in Calgary, AB and hope to get finally their first victory.
