Not a big story in a game when 5th ranked Sea Hawks (1-3) were edged by top-ranked Varsity Reds (2-0) in Fredericton, NB 90-88 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Sea Hawks won third quarter 22-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Varsity Reds made 23-of-25 free shots (92.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Sea Hawks turnovers. It was a very good performance for guard Alex Desroches (193) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 9 rebounds. Michael Fosu contributed with 24 points (made all of his eight free throws) for the winners. Four Varsity Reds players scored in double figures. Forward Robbie Habib (193-89) replied with 38 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds and center Mike Helsby (193) added 28 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Sea Hawks. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Varsity Reds keep a position of league leader, which they share with 8 other teams. Loser Sea Hawks keep the fifth place with three games lost. Varsity Reds will face Huskies (#6) in Halifax, VS in the next round where they are favorite.
