Regular Season Round 5: Maccabi Rishon - Galil Gilboa 83-88

There was a small surprise in Rishon Le-Zion where fifth ranked Galil Gilboa (3-2) beat 3rd placed Maccabi Rishon (2-2) 88-83 on Sunday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Maccabi Rishon won third quarter 24-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maccabi Rishon was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American-Polish point guard Chris Thomas (186-82, college: Notre Dame) who scored 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). American Romeo Travis (200-84, college: Akron) chipped in 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). American guard Derwin Kitchen (193-86, college: Florida St., agency: VVG Sports) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals and the other American import forward Brandon Bowman (204-84, college: Georgetown) added 16 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Maccabi Rishon's coach Effi Birnbaum rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Galil Gilboa moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Hapoel J-M. Loser Maccabi Rishon dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. Galil Gilboa will face higher ranked B.C. Habikaa (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maccabi Rishon will play against the league's second-placed Ironi Ashkelon.
