Regular Season Round 7: Taipans - Breakers 80-78

A very close game took place in Cairns between Cairns Taipans and New Zealand Breakers. Sixth ranked Cairns Taipans (4-4) got a very close home victory over much higher ranked New Zealand Breakers (5-3). Cairns Taipans managed to escape with a 2-point win 80-78 on Sunday evening. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Strangely New Zealand Breakers outrebounded Cairns Taipans 40-24 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great evening for American point guard Jamar Wilson (185-84, college: Albany, agency: Pro One Sports) who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international power forward Alexander Loughton (205-83, college: ODU) helped adding 22 points. At the losing side New Zealand swingman Thomas Abercrombie (198-87, college: Washington St., agency: Priority Sports) responded with 21 points and 8 rebounds and Fiji-New Zealand forward Mika Vukona (198-82) scored 10 points and 6 rebounds. Five New Zealand Breakers players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Cairns Taipans moved-up to fourth place. Loser New Zealand Breakers dropped to the third position with three games lost. Cairns Taipans will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. New Zealand Breakers will play against Townsville Crocodiles in Wulguru and hope to secure a win.
