Regular Season Round 8: Lucentum - Unicaja 77-97

The biggest surprise of round 8 was guest Unicaja Malaga's (6-2) easy road victory over Meridiano Alicante (#5) 97-77 on Sunday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Unicaja Malaga. Meridiano Alicante managed to win fourth quarter 28-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Unicaja Malaga shot 66.1 percent from the field. It was a great shooting night for Unicaja Malaga especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.9 percentage. The best player for the winners was American guard Gerald Fitch (191-82, college: Kentucky, agency: SportsTalent) who scored 14 points and 4 assists. Latvian guard Kristaps Valters (190-81) chipped in 19 points (perfect from downtown making all five shots). Unicaja Malaga's coach Jesus Mateo used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bulgarian forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86) produced 19 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) and Brazilian point guard Rafael Freire (188-92) added 11 points respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Unicaja Malaga moved-up to third place, which they share with Caja Laboral. Meridiano Alicante at the other side keeps the fifth position with three games lost. They share it with Cajasol and Valencia. Unicaja Malaga is looking forward to face Caja Laboral (#3) in Vitoria in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Meridiano Alicante will play on the road against Lagun Aro GBC in San Sebastian and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
