Everything went according to plan when seventh ranked Meridiano Alicante (6-3) edged bottom-ranked Lagun Aro GBC (2-7) in San Sebastian 71-68 on Sunday. Lagun Aro GBC was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 18-13 charge of Meridiano Alicante, which allowed them to win the game. Lagun Aro GBC was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for American forward Kyle Singler (203-88, college: Duke) who led his team to a victory with 22 points. Bulgarian forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Four Meridiano Alicante players scored in double figures. American forward Andy Panko (204-77, college: Lebanon Valley) answered with 18 points and 6 rebounds and the former international swingman Sergi Vidal (198-81) added 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for Lagun Aro GBC. Meridiano Alicante moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Caja Laboral and Valencia. Lagun Aro GBC at the other side dropped to the bottom position with seven games lost. Meridiano Alicante will face CAI Zaragoza (#9) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Lagun Aro GBC will play against Caja Laboral (#5) in Vitoria.
