Regular Season Round 7: Pozzuoli - Taranto 70-71

The most exciting game of round 7 in the A1 took place in Pozzuoli. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 7th ranked Pall.Pozzuoli (3-4) to first ranked Taranto (6-1) 71-70 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-8. But Pall.Pozzuoli won second period 17-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Taranto dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Pall.Pozzuoli's 30. They outrebounded Pall.Pozzuoli 45-34 including 34 on the defensive glass. American center Kia Vaughn (193-87, college: Rutgers) fired a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. International forward Simona Ballardini (181-81) chipped in 13 points. Taranto's coach Roberto Ricchini used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Kelly Mazzante (183-82, college: Penn St.) produced 23 points and Serbian center Daliborka Vilipic (196-75) added 11 points and 10 rebounds respectively for lost side. Four Pall.Pozzuoli players scored in double figures. Taranto have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 6-1 record, which they share with Umbertide and Lucca. Pall.Pozzuoli at the other side keeps the seventh position with four games lost. They share it with Basket Parma. Taranto is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Priolo (#12) at home in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Pall.Pozzuoli will play against Alcamo (#10) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
