We should mention about the upset which took place in Varese, where higher ranked Umana Venezia (4-3) lost to ninth ranked Cimberio Varese (5-3) in a road game 67-73 on Sunday. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Umana Venezia. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-19. But Umana Venezia won second period 18-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Cimberio Varese won last quarter 19-15. They made 19-of-24 free shots (79.2 percent) during the game. Cimberio Varese forced 20 Umana Venezia turnovers. Umana Venezia was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was French forward Yakhouba Diawara (201-82, college: Pepperdine) who scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Justin Hurtt (194-88, college: Tulsa) chipped in 18 points. American point guard Alvin Young (189-75, college: Niagara) produced 20 points and 5 rebounds and Polish center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82) added 9 points respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cimberio Varese moved-up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Umana Venezia dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. Cimberio Varese will have a break next round. Umana Venezia will play at home against Novipiu CM (#15) in Casale.
