There was a minor upset when 4th placed Gold Coast Blaze (4-4) was defeated on the road by fourth ranked Cairns Taipans (5-5) 87-78 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 87-78. Cairns Taipans made 27-of-31 free shots (87.1 percent) during the game. Gold Coast Blaze was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American point guard Jamar Wilson (185-84, college: Albany, agency: Pro One Sports) who scored 23 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. The former international power forward Alexander Loughton (205-83, college: ODU) chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Dominican guard Adris Deleon (180-84, college: E.Washington) who recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds and the former international forward Mark Worthington (202-83, college: Metro St.) added 17 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Cairns Taipans have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fourth place with 5-5 record. Gold Coast Blaze at the other side dropped to the sixth position with four games lost. Cairns Taipans will face higher ranked Melbourne Tigers (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gold Coast Blaze will play against the league's leader New Zealand Breakers in Auckland.
