Regular Season Round 9: Asteras - Panionios 59-62

The most exciting game of round 9 in the A1 took place in Athens. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 3rd placed Asteras (5-4) to fifth ranked Panionios (5-4) 62-59 in the game for the third place. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-18. But Asteras won second period 16-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panionios made 22-of-28 free shots (78.6 percent) during the game. Panionios outrebounded Asteras 36-24 including 28 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for American guard Brittany Johnson (180-89, college: Ohio St.) who led her team to a victory with 21 points. International power forward Peli Papamichail (189-86, agency: Josep and Nicolas) contributed with 8 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Latvian center Zenta Melnika (197-91) answered with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds and swingman Vassiliki Daskalopoulou (178-84) added 13 points in the effort for Asteras. Panionios moved-up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Asteras. Panionios' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Panathinaikos.
