Regular Season Round 8: Valur - Haukar 73-76
Date: December 8, 2011
Bottom-ranked Valur (0-8) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their eighth consecutive match to eleventh ranked Haukar (2-6) 76-73 on Thursday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Valur won fourth quarter 24-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Haukar forced 20 Valur turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Haukar made 9 blocks. The best player for the winners was American forward Christopher Smith (198-82, college: St.Edward's) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Helgi Einarsson (195-89) chipped in 19 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). American guard Garrison Johnson (196-88, college: Jackson St., agency: Strategic Sports) produced 30 points and 6 rebounds and Slovenian power forward Igor Tratnik (206-89) added 12 points, 21 rebounds and 9 blocks respectively for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Haukar maintains eleventh position with 2-6 record. Newly promoted Valur still closes the standings with eight games lost. Haukar will meet at home higher ranked IR (#6) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Valur's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Reykjavik to the arena KR.
