Date: December 11, 2011
The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Athens: Panionios (#4) and Panathinaikos (#6). Panionios (6-4) won against visiting Panathinaikos (5-5) 84-72. The game was mostly controlled by Panionios. Panathinaikos managed to win fourth quarter 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panionios shot 63.6 percent from the field and made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Panathinaikos' players. 24 personal fouls committed by Panathinaikos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Brittany Johnson (180-89, college: Ohio St.) scored 36 points (!!!) and 5 assists (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and forward Marianna Axiopoulou (180-84) chipped in 13 points and 11 assists during the contest. At the losing side American power forward Diana Delva (188, college: Hartford) responded with 24 points and 9 rebounds and the former international power forward Afroditi Kosma (187-83) scored 12 points and 9 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Panathinaikos' coach Giasemi Siamandoura rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Panionios have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Asteras. Panathinaikos lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth position with five games lost. They share it with DAS Ano Liosa and FEA Neas. Panionios is looking forward to face Apollon Ptol. (#11) in Ptolemaida in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Panathinaikos will play at home against PAOK (#10) in Thessaloniki and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
