Regular Season Round 35: Pioneros - Abejas 111-103

Rather predictable result when seventh ranked Pioneros (22-13) won against 9th ranked Abejas (13-20) in Cancun 111-103 on Monday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 31-18. But Abejas won third quarter 30-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Pioneros shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Abejas' players. It was an exceptional evening for American guard LeRoy Hickerson (196-82, college: Cumberlands) who led the winners and scored 27 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. His fellow American import forward John Millsap (198-82, college: UTSA) accounted for 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Millsap is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Pioneros' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Lorrenzo Wade (198-85, college: San Diego St.) came up with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Puerto Rican guard Jesus Verdejo (193-85, college: S.Florida) added 33 points (!!!) respectively for Abejas in the defeat. Five Pioneros and four Abejas players scored in double figures. Pioneros moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Soles. Abejas lost their third game in a row. They dropped to the tenth position with 20 games lost. Pioneros will again meet at home Abejas (#10) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Abejas will have a break next round.
