Regular Season Round 14: Sorgues - Clermont 96-89

There was no surprise when 14th ranked Stade Clermont (4-10) was defeated on the road by third ranked Sorgues (10-4) 96-89 on Saturday. Stade Clermont was trailing by 11 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 33-25 charge of Sorgues, which allowed them to win the game. They made 29-of-33 free shots (87.9 percent) during the game. Stade Clermont was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was guard Arnaud Thinon (178-87) who scored 17 points. Naturalized Moroccan guard Yassine Bassine (198-84) chipped in 13 points and 4 assists. Five Sorgues players scored in double figures. Forward Jonathan Beugnot (201-83, college: Clayton St.) produced 20 points and 9 rebounds and Bulgarian swingman Simeon Naydenov (201-81, college: Louisville, agency: Global Sports Plaza) added 16 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Sorgues have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with St Quentin. Loser Stade Clermont keeps the fourteenth position with ten games lost. Sorgues will face Saint-Quentin (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Stade Clermont will play against Chartres (#8) and be promoted back to the ProB just one year after relegation.
