There was a surprise result when eleventh ranked Spartans (3-6) beat higher ranked Pronghorn (4-5) in Langley, BC 105-97 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 33-21 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Spartans dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Pronghorn's 40 and made 24-of-31 free shots (77.4 percent) during the game. Spartans forced 20 Pronghorn turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Pronghorn was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for American forward Kyle Coston (203-87, college: Portland St.) who helped to win the game recording 35 points (!!!). Guard Sean Peter (191) contributed with 26 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Center Derek Waldner (201) answered with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) and Daryl Cooper added 16 points and 5 assists in the effort for Pronghorn. Four Spartans and five Pronghorn players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Spartans moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Calgary and Western. Loser Pronghorn dropped to the third position with five games lost. Spartans will face Dinos (#10) in Calgary, AB in the next round. Pronghorn will play on the road against Cascades (#4) in Abbotsford, BC and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
