Regular Season Round 14: GTK Gliwice - Alba Chorzow 82-78

There was an upset when higher ranked Alba Chorzow (9-5) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked GTK Gliwice (7-7) 82-78 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Alba Chorzow won third quarter 19-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when GTK Gliwice won last quarter 20-18. They also forced 39 Alba Chorzow turnovers and outrebounded them 43-27 including a 26-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when GTK Gliwice made 9 blocks. Power forward Lukasz Nawrot (200-83) had a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and forward Przemyslaw Malona (198-85) chipped in 14 points and 14 rebounds during the contest. Forward Tomasz Gembus (198-87) responded with 17 points and point guard Piotr Magdziarz (187-90) scored 10 points, 5 rebounds and 8 blocks. Four GTK Gliwice and five Alba Chorzow players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. GTK Gliwice moved-up to seventh place in Group B, which they share with AZS AGH Alstom and HK Zory. Alba Chorzow at the other side dropped to the fifth position with five games lost. GTK Gliwice will face higher ranked AZS AWF K-ce (#4) in Katowice in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Alba Chorzow will play at home against the league's second-placed BM Wegiel Stal and will have a slim chance for a victory.
