Regular Season Round 14: Lakehead - Western 87-66

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Thunderwolves as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Thunderwolves smashed 8th ranked Mustangs in Thunder Bay, ON 87-66. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 4-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 87-66. Thunderwolves looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Venzal Russel (188-87, college: Vermilion CC) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 4 assists. Guard Greg Carter (178-90) contributed with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Four Thunderwolves players scored in double figures. Forward Peter Scholtes (196) replied with 35 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds and Jermaine Bernard added 10 points and 4 assists in the effort for Mustangs. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Thunderwolves have a solid four-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Victoria and Laurier. Mustangs at the other side keep the eighth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Calgary. Mustangs will play next round against Gryphons trying to get back on the winning streak. Thunderwolves will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
