Regular Season Round 18: Lakehead - McMaster 57-74
Date: January 20, 2012
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Thunder Bay where one of their biggest challengers Lakehead (7-6) was defeated by fifth ranked McMaster (6-7) 74-57 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by McMaster. Lakehead was better in fourth quarter 20-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Lakehead to just 7 points in third quarter. McMaster forced 19 Lakehead turnovers and outrebounded them 39-28 including a 27-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Forward Taylor Chiarot (180-89) scored 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and guard Elizabeth Burns (170) chipped in 13 points and 4 assists during the contest. Five McMaster players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was forward Lindsay Druery (185-88) with 9 points and 9 rebounds and guard Ayse Kalkan (173-91) scored 12 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. McMaster maintains fifth position with 6-7 record. Loser Lakehead keeps the fourth place with six games lost. McMaster will have a break next round. Lakehead will play again at home against McMaster (#5) in Hamilton and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
