Regular Season Round 13: Valur - Stjarnan 71-96
Date: January 27, 2012
Bottom-ranked Valur (0-13) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 96-71 loss to second ranked Stjarnan (9-4) in Reykjavik on Friday evening. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. The game was mostly controlled by Stjarnan. Valur managed to win third quarter 23-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Stjarnan shot 63.3 percent from the field. American-Estonian forward Renato Lindmets (198-84, college: Westfield St.) stepped up and scored 20 points and 7 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners and American guard Justin Shouse (180-81, college: Mercyhurst) chipped in 11 points and 9 assists. At the losing side center Birgir Petursson (205-86) responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) and Slovenian power forward Igor Tratnik (206-89) scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. Five Stjarnan and four Valur players scored in double figures. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Stjarnan maintains second place with 9-4 record having just three points less than leader Grindavik, which they share with Keflavik. Valur lost their thirteenth game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Stjarnan will meet at home Haukar (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Valur will play against Keflavik and hopes to get finally their first victory.
