Regular Season Round 31: Takamatsu FA - Toyama Grouses 79-76 OT

There was an upset when higher ranked Toyama Grouses (12-13) were edged on the road by ninth ranked Takamatsu FA (2-25) 79-76 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 16-10. But Toyama Grouses won second period 16-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Toyama Grouses used huge pressure winning it 20-18 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 12-15. Takamatsu FA forced 21 Toyama Grouses turnovers. It was a great evening for American forward Kevin Smith (195-89, college: Richmond) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. His fellow American import forward Michael Nunnally (203-86, college: Pacific) helped adding 12 points and 15 rebounds. At the losing side Masashi Joho (183-82) responded with 29 points (made all of his eight free throws) and American-Dominican power forward Larry Turner (210-82, college: Tennessee St., agency: Strategic Sports) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Takamatsu FA maintains ninth place with 2-25 record. Loser Toyama Grouses keep the fifth position with 13 games lost. Takamatsu FA will face again higher ranked Toyama Grouses (#5) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
