The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Penarol (16-5) in Formosa on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by seventh ranked La Union (11-10) 99-89. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Penarol. The hosts trailed by 9 points at the halftime before their 54-35 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. La Union made 31-of-40 free shots (77.5 percent) during the game. 30 personal fouls committed by Penarol helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for forward Javier Caceres (201-85) who led his team to a victory with 22 points and 7 rebounds. American guard Joe Smith (193-77, college: Al.-Huntsville, agency: Priority Sports) contributed with 23 points (went 11 for 11 at the free throw line !!!) for the winners. The former international forward Marcos Mata (202-86) answered with 19 points and 8 rebounds and guard Facundo Campazzo (180-91) added 14 points and 6 assists in the effort for Penarol. Five La Union and four Penarol players scored in double figures. Penarol's coach Sergio Hernandez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. La Union have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain seventh place with 11-10 record. Defending champion Penarol still keeps top position with five games lost. La Union are looking forward to face Wuber-Est.Bahia (#10) in Bahia Blanca in the next round. Penarol will play on the road against Regatas Corrientes (#8) and is hoping to win this game.
